Preparing for the Puppy

I have taken Agatha and Archie's excellent advice about locking up my toys. We've gathered them up in a crate and I will be hiding them in the closet before the puppy comes home on Monday! Barbara has been puppy proofing and cleaning in preparation for his arrival. I hate to tell you the size of the dust bunnies we found behind the couch

She bought him a bed (which he will probably rip up) as well as a bunch of toys which I inspected thoroughly. Maybe he will leave mine alone if he has his own.

Then she picked up lots of Bitter Apple and Nature's Miracle in preparation for puppy chewing and puppy accidents. This worries me. What if this puppy chews on my bed or has an accident on it?

But my biggest concern is that Barbara will spend all her time with the puppy and not with me! We have our little routines and I don't want a puppy to mess them up.

Every morning we do ear rubs. Barbara rubs my ears and tells me how good and smart and pretty I am. I love the way the ear rubs feel and I lean into her hand and she rubs my ear even more.

You can see that it almost puts me into a trance.

What if this puppy takes up so much of her time that we don't have time for ear rubs and tracking and the dog park and other fun stuff?

We cannot imagine that Barbara would not continue to rub your ears and take you to the dog park, and do everything she has always done to show you she loves you. And we suspect you will have fun with your little brother and grow to love him! The great thing about love is how it expands indefinitely!

Tom and Tama-Chan

Heidi: You know what? I thought the same thing when my little sister, Shelby, came home. Our mom really wasn't expecting to get another puppy (I was only 10 mos. old) but it was a situation that she couldn't say no to. (Well, thats what SHE says...) I was so upset that I had diarrhea and I puked on and off for two weeks. And our routines did change a little bit. But then I started to see how fun it was to have another DOG to play with. You can't play "bitey face" with your human. It's been 6 years now, and we love eachother very much. Sure, she's sometimes annoying (Shelby: HEY!) but it is fun to always have some one to play with...even if mom is busy. And it's nice being a big sister and bossing the other one around...
Shelby: I love having a big sister. My mom says I think that the sun rises and sets with Heidi. OK, I think that that is a LITTLE exaggherated (!) but I do really love Heidi. Mom says we're two peas in a pod. Mmmm...peas... Best of luck with your new bro, and remember that it's OK to show "mean-teeth" and to "school" him. Thats how us little guys learn!

Take Care!

Don't worry, the little guy will be such trouble, your Mommy will suddenly think of you as the best trained doggie ever! You will always get ear rubs, those didn't stop after I got a little brother, He just pushes me away sometimes, so I had to learn to push back! Have fun!

I love ear rubs too! hm. When I was a puppy I did take up lots of time and attentions. But I think you will be ok because the puppy will have you too, so will not need Barbara lots.

Niamh, I speak from experience when I say you'll have to be patient and do lots of sharing, but you'll be the beautiful big sister the puppy will love and look up to, and you'll have so much fun playing and running around!

Your pal,
Joey

Niamh,

I don't think you need to worry. I'm sure your mom will still make special time just for you. I don't think those ear rubs are going to stop any time soon!

Does your puppy have a name yet?

Notice, sweet Niamh, how I referred to him as YOUR puppy. For that's what he will ultimately be. You will guide him wisely in that secret dog language and he will learn far more from you about limits, what's expected and manners.

Don't worry, Niamh, you can NEVER be replaced nor ignored. I think your position in the household is even more important now!

Your pal,
Fenway

I am so excited for you that you're getting a puppy brother!! You will have a friend for life and you'll have so much fun together. You'll see. And don't ever worry that Barbara is going to stop rubbing your ears and taking you to the park and doing all the things you love doing together. Let me tell you, she has enough love for a zillion dogs. She'll never forget that you were first. We can't wait to read about all the adventures you will have together.
